Women’s hockey sweep Broncos, men stay undefeated
WOMEN
On Thursday, Oct. 30, the Trojans women’s hockey team took on the Olds College Broncos at the Olds Sportsplex.
After no scoring in the first period, Sydney Hollman assisted Jessa Brewer on the power play to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead midway through the second period.
Just 15 seconds after the Trojans’ goal, Ashley McCallum tied it for the Broncos.
In the third period, Kaylan Easson scored after four minutes to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
Ava Dalebozik tied it again for the Broncos midway through the period.
Trojans captain Esther Boelema scored the game-winner late in the game to secure a 3-2 victory.
The two teams met again in Calgary on Saturday night at WinSport Arena.
Anna Kapocsi opened the scoring with 15 seconds left in the second period to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
In the third period, Kaylee Williams scored halfway through the frame to double the Trojans’ lead.
Emerson Stuparyk got one back for the Broncos on the power play, but the Trojans held on for a 2-1 victory.
With the back-to-back wins, the Trojans sit in fourth place in the ACAC women’s hockey standings.
Next up for the Trojans are back-to-back road games against the NAIT Ooks on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.
MEN
After two straight wins to open their season, the Trojans men’s hockey team took on the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder on Friday, Oct. 31 at WinSport Arena.
Owen Underhill and Tate Yule scored back-to-back goals early in the first period to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
Late in the period, Ben Christian got one back for the Thunder to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The Thunder scored the only goal in the second period to tie the game at two.
Less than a minute into the third, Liam Fitzgerald and Christian assisted Grayson Reid to put the Thunder up 3-2.
Tate Schofer scored three minutes later for the Trojans to tie the game at three and send it to overtime.
Underhill, who opened the scoring, ended it as well, netting the overtime winner and giving the Trojans a 4-3 victory.
The two teams met again the next day in Edmonton.
Travis Hensrud scored the lone goal of the first period to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes into the second, Schofer scored for the Trojans, followed 12 seconds later by a goal from Fitzgerald to make it 3-1.
Nick Dobson scored the tying goal for the Thunder a couple of minutes later.
The Trojans added two power-play goals from Kai Billey and Hensrud to take a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
A shorthanded goal from Underhill sealed the 5-2 win.
With the back-to-back victories, the Trojans sit second in the ACAC men’s hockey standings with a 4-0 record.
Next up for the Trojans is a road game against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in Camrose.
The following day, the Trojans face the Vikings at the Cochrane SLS Centre at 8:15 p.m.
Women’s basketball split weekend games, men win back-to-back games
Women
The Trojans women’s basketball team took on the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Friday, Oct. 31 in Grande Prairie, Alta.
A strong first half had the Trojans up 38-21 at halftime.
The Trojans’ defence held the Wolves to just four points in the third quarter, which was enough for the visitors to take a 72-36 win.
Kyler Varga led the Trojans with 19 points in the victory.
The next day, the Trojans dropped a close matchup 70-68 against The King’s University Eagles in Edmonton to fall to 1-3 on the season.
Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Lethbridge to face the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.
The two teams meet again on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. in the SAIT Bubble.
Men
The Trojans men’s basketball team travelled to Grande Prairie, Alta., to take on the Wolves on Friday, Oct. 31.
Up 47-38 at halftime, the Trojans’ offence shone in the second half, taking the game 87-68.
The Trojans faced the Eagles the next day in Edmonton.
For a second game in a row, the Trojans’ offence was dominant, putting up 99 points in a 99-73 win.
With the back-to-back victories, the Trojans sit tied for second in the ACAC men’s basketball standings with a 3-0 record.
Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Lethbridge to face the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Friday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m.
The two teams meet again on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. in the SAIT Bubble.
Women’s and men’s volleyball split weekend games
Women
After a 2-0 start to the season, the Trojans women’s volleyball team took on the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Friday, Oct. 31 at the SAIT Bubble.
The Trojans won the match in straight sets, taking it 25-15, 25-20 and 25-18.
Leading the attack for the Trojans was Sarah Henriksen with six kills.
Madison Dyck had a game-high 18 assists for the Trojans.
The following day, the Trojans faced The King’s University Eagles at the SAIT Bubble.
A close first set went to the Trojans 25-23, followed by a 25-16 win in the second.
The Eagles struck back with two straight 25-16 sets to force a fifth.
In another tight set, the Eagles edged the Trojans 15-11 to take the match 3-2.
With a win and a loss on the weekend, the Trojans sit tied for third in the ACAC women’s volleyball standings with a 3-1 record.
Next up for the Trojans is a back-to-back matchup against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks. The first match is Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble.
The teams meet again the following day in Lethbridge at 6 p.m.
Men
After opening the season with a win, the Trojans men’s volleyball team took on the Wolves on Friday, Oct. 31.
The Wolves’ offence proved too strong for the home side, taking three straight sets 25-20, 28-26 and 25-23 to hand the Trojans a 3-0 loss.
On Saturday, the Trojans swept the Eagles in straight sets — 25-22, 25-21 and a close 28-26 final set.
Brandon Burnside recorded 14 kills in the win, while Ryan Schebesch tallied 33 assists.
With a win and a loss on the weekend, the Trojans sit tied for third in the ACAC men’s volleyball standings with a 2-1 record.
Next up for the Trojans is a back-to-back matchup against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks. The first match is Friday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble.
