Woyessa captures CCAA cross-country nationals bronze

With another standout ACAC men’s cross-country campaign, Nathan Woyessa competed in the CCAA men’s cross-country national championship on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The national championships were hosted by Holland College in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Woyessa won the bronze medal for the Trojans in the men’s 8-kilometre race, finishing third with a time of 25 minutes 13 seconds and a pace of three minutes 12 seconds per kilometre.

This is Woyessa’s second straight year medalling at the cross-country national championships. He finished first the previous year.

 

Women’s basketball split games with Kodiaks; men sweep Kodiaks

Women
The Trojans women’s basketball team took on the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Friday, Nov. 7, in Lethbridge.

At halftime, the Trojans led 35-28.

Holding the Kodiaks’ offence to just 10 points in the third quarter, the Trojans picked up a 66-51 road win Friday night.

Kitwana Sparks led the Trojans’ offence with 16 points and six rebounds.

The two teams met the following day in Calgary at the SAIT Bubble.

The Kodiaks led the Trojans 29-23 at halftime and held on for a narrow 61-58 win.

Trojans veteran Kyler Varga scored 17 points in the loss, while Sparks recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

With a win and a loss on the weekend, the Trojans women’s basketball team sit tied for third in the ACAC standings with a 2-3 record.

Next up for the Trojans are two home games at the SAIT Bubble. They host the Keyano College Huskies on Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. and the Lakeland College Rustlers on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m.

Men
The Trojans men’s basketball team had back-to-back games against the Kodiaks on the weekend.

Game one took place Friday, Nov. 7, in Lethbridge.

The Trojans jumped out to a 43-38 lead at halftime.

Holding the Kodiaks’ offence to just 13 points in the second quarter, the Trojans rolled to a 92-71 victory.

Marc Denault-Gabriel recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

The following day, the Trojans hosted the Kodiaks at the SAIT Bubble.

The Kodiaks came out strong in the first quarter with a 20-15 lead but were held to only four points in the second quarter and 12 in the third as the Trojans captured an 89-83 win Saturday night.

Killian Yopa recorded a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 15 rebounds.

With the back-to-back wins, the Trojans men’s basketball team remain undefeated and sit first in the ACAC standings with a 5-0 record.

Next up for the Trojans are two home games at the SAIT Bubble. They take on the Keyano College Huskies on Friday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. and the Lakeland College Rustlers on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m.

 

Women’s hockey drop two straight to Ooks; men sweep Vikings

Women
On Friday, Nov. 7, the Trojans women’s hockey team took on the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton.

After a scoreless first period, Kaylan Easson opened the scoring for the Trojans midway through the second.

The Ooks responded with a goal from Hanna Paquette to tie the game at 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Maria Ayre and Briella Benton scored in the third period for the home side, giving the Ooks a 3-1 win.

The two teams met again the following day in Edmonton.

Chelsey Francis-Barrow and Allison McGregor gave the Ooks an early 2-0 lead in the first period.

In the second, Caitlyn Tong made it 3-0 for NAIT before Lily Roberts scored a power-play goal for the Trojans midway through the frame.

The Ooks added two late goals from Madison Teague and Grace Morton to make it 5-1 after two periods.

Grier Sladaida scored two minutes into the third to seal a 6-1 win for NAIT.

With the two losses, the Trojans sit in fourth place in the ACAC women’s hockey standings.

Next up for the Trojans are back-to-back away games against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, Nov. 21, at 6:45 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Men
After starting the season 4-0, the Trojans men’s hockey team looked to continue their winning streak against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings.

The Trojans faced the Vikings on Friday, Nov. 7, in Camrose, Alta.

Ryan Neumann scored the lone goal of the first period to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

Neumann added his second of the game midway through the second to double the lead.

Conrad Phillips got one back for the Vikings late in the period to make it 2-1.

The Vikings tied the game four minutes into the third through Jason Biensch.

Colby Bear and Carter Briltz both scored for the Trojans to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.

The Vikings added another late goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Trojans secured a 4-3 win.

The two teams met again the next day in Cochrane, Alta.

Trojans rookie Trais Hensrud opened the scoring five minutes into the game on the power play to give the home side a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Jayven Leslie equalized eight minutes into the second period, but Trojans veteran Cory King responded less than a minute later.

The Vikings tied it again midway through the frame before late goals from Colby Ball and rookie Gavin Anderson made it 4-2 after two periods.

Zach Cain added an empty-netter in the final minute to cap off a 5-2 win for the Trojans.

With the back-to-back victories, the Trojans sit second in the ACAC men’s hockey standings with a 6-0 record.

Next up for the Trojans are back-to-back road games against Briercrest College on Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m.

 

Women’s volleyball sweep Kodiaks; men drop back-to-back games

Women
The Trojans women’s volleyball team had home and away games against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks this weekend.

Game one took place Friday, Nov. 7, at the SAIT Bubble.

The Kodiaks took the first set 25-20, but the Trojans quickly responded.

The home side then won three straight sets to defeat the Kodiaks 3-1.

Trojans veteran Sarah Henriksen led all players with 14 kills, while Grace Florence recorded 38 assists to lead the Trojans’ offence.

The following day, the two teams met in Lethbridge.

It was another dominant offensive performance from the Trojans, who won 25-14, 25-17 and 25-16 to take the match in straight sets.

Henriksen and Mia Delaquis each recorded nine kills, while Florence added 32 assists.

With the two wins over the Kodiaks, the Trojans women’s volleyball team sit first in the ACAC standings with a 5-1 record.

Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Fort McMurray, Alta., to face the Keyano College Huskies on Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m.

Men
After a 2-1 start to the season, the Trojans men’s volleyball team took on the undefeated Kodiaks on Friday, Nov. 7, at the SAIT Bubble.

The league’s top-ranked side took the opening match in straight sets, winning 25-17, 25-23 and 25-12.

Trojans rookie Logan Williams led all players with 11 kills on 19 attempts.

On Saturday, the teams met again in Lethbridge.

The Trojans took the opening set 25-21, but the Kodiaks battled back to win a close second set 26-24.

The home side then took the next two sets 25-20 and 25-14 to claim a 3-1 victory.

Williams once again led the match in kills, recording 15 on 27 attempts.

With the back-to-back losses to the Kodiaks, the Trojans men’s volleyball team sit fourth in the ACAC standings with a 2-3 record.

Next up for the Trojans is a trip north to face the Keyano College Huskies on Friday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m., followed by a matchup with the Lakeland College Rustlers on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. in Lloydminster, Alta.
