Trojans soccer compete in ACAC championships

WOMEN

It was a perfect regular season for the SAIT Trojans women’s soccer team.

Averaging nearly five goals a game in the regular season, the Trojans travelled to Lethbridge to compete in the ACAC women’s soccer championships from Friday, Oct. 24 to Sunday, Oct. 26.

The Trojans faced provincial rival NAIT Ooks on Saturday at 10 a.m.

After a scoreless first half, Jyla Micael Erandio scored in the 51st minute to put the Ooks ahead.

The remainder of the match saw back-and-forth chances, but the score stayed 1-0.

With the loss in the semifinal, the Trojans played for bronze Sunday morning against CCAA women’s soccer nationals host, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.

Veteran striker Meaghan Wiebe scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Queens equalized on a penalty in the 58th minute from Olivia Lundell.

In the 70th minute, Lundell took a pass out of the air and volleyed it from outside the corner of the box past the Trojans keeper to make it 2-1.

Lundell’s goal stood as the winner as the Queens captured the bronze-medal upset.

 

MEN

With a 4-0 win against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in the final match of the regular season, the SAIT Trojans men’s soccer team finished in first place and earned a bye into the semifinals of the ACAC men’s soccer championship.

The Trojans took on the Ooks on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. at Comet Stadium.

In the 19th minute, Trojans striker Rob Woodroffe-Brown scored off a free kick just outside the box to give SAIT an early lead.

All-conference first-team midfielder Peter Jones equalized for the Ooks less than a minute later.

Just before halftime, Ooks winger Jameson Kiezik blew past Trojans centre-back Cruz Dodson and lobbed SAIT keeper Tristan Frazier to make it 2-1.

The second half went scoreless, giving the Ooks the 2-1 win, sending the Trojans to play for bronze on Sunday.

The Huskies opened the scoring in the fourth minute when a cross into the box found Daniel Hudson unmarked at the back post, finishing past Frazier.

Just before halftime, Trojans fullback Masataka Kajitani brought down a Huskies striker in the box, awarding Keyano a penalty.

Frazier made a crucial save to keep SAIT in the match.

Five minutes into the second half, Woodroffe-Brown broke into the Huskies box and squared a perfect pass to midfielder Hafiz Majhor, who tapped it in to level the match at one.

In the 66th minute, Woodroffe-Brown was taken down in the box and converted the penalty to give the Trojans a 2-1 win.

With the victory, the Trojans captured the ACAC men’s soccer bronze medal.

 

Woyessa captures gold in ACAC cross-country

For the second year in a row, SAIT Trojans runner Nathan Woyessa won gold at the ACAC men’s cross-country championships this past Saturday.

The 2025 ACAC cross-country championships took place Oct. 25, hosted by the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves in Grande Prairie, Alta.

WOMEN

In the women’s 6-kilometre race, Trojans veteran runner Kerigan Frampton finished sixth with a time of 24 minutes 32 seconds and an average pace of 4:04 per kilometre.

Behind Frampton was Eden Pelletier, who finished 21st with a time of 26:56 and a 4:29 pace per kilometre.

 

Men

In the men’s 8-kilometre race, Woyessa placed first, crossing the finish line more than 35 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

He finished with a time of 25:09 and an average pace of 3:09 per kilometre.

Also competing for the Trojans was Willem Grant, who placed 25th with a time of 30:57.

Judah Sutherland and Alexei Fadeyiw also represented SAIT, finishing 40th and 42nd respectively.

 

Men’s hockey starts season 2-0

The SAIT Trojans men’s hockey team opened their season with back-to-back road wins against the Portage College Voyageurs this past weekend.

Game 1 took place Friday, Oct. 24.

Rookie Owen Underhill scored just 43 seconds into the first period, giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

The Voyageurs struck back later in the period with a shorthanded goal from Jack Jarvis to tie the game.

Early in the second period, Portage forward Brenar Rosychuk scored to make it 2-1.

The Trojans responded with two goals less than three minutes apart — one from Trygvr Guns and a power-play marker from Cory King — to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Zach Cain added an empty-net goal with one minute left in the third period to secure the 4-2 win for SAIT.

The teams met again the following night.

In the opening period, the Voyageurs scored two power-play goals from Aidan Taylor and Jonah Smith to take a 2-0 lead.

The Trojans answered with three late goals in the second period — a power-play goal from Guns and even-strength tallies from Austin Reschny and Tate Schofer — to move ahead 3-2 after two periods.

Another power-play goal from the Voyageurs tied the game two minutes into the third.

Both teams scored a minute apart midway through the period, sending the game to overtime tied 4-4.

Cain netted the winner one minute and 40 seconds into overtime to complete the sweep for the Trojans.

With the back-to-back victories, the Trokans sits tied for second in the ACAC men’s hockey standings, having played just two games.

Next up for the Trojans is a home game against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder on Friday, Oct. 31 at 6:45 p.m. at Winsport Arena.

The teams meet again the following day in Edmonton at 7 p.m.

 

Women’s rugby captures championship, men advance to finals

Women

This past weekend, the SAIT Trojans women’s rugby team competed in the Prairie University Women’s Rugby Championship playoffs hosted by Brandon University.

The Trojans faced the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, Oct. 25.

The second-seeded Calgary side won 41-29 to advance to the final on Sunday.

At 1 p.m., the Trojans took on the host Brandon University Bobcats.

In a nail-biting finish, SAIT held on for a 24-22 victory to capture the PUWRC championship.

 

Men

The Trojans men’s rugby team faced the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the Prairie University Men’s Rugby Championship semifinal on Saturday, Oct. 25.

With a 45-26 win, the Trojans advanced to the final Sunday against city rival University of Calgary Dinos.

Due to an ongoing investigation into breaches of the PUMRC rules and regulations, no official scoreline has been released for the championship final.
