Women’s soccer remain unbeaten against Queens, men dominate Kings
WOMEN
After extending their unbeaten streak last weekend, the SAIT Trojans women’s soccer team took on the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens at home on Sunday, Oct. 12.
Trojans captain Meaghan Wiebe assisted veteran Nikki Charlton in the 23rd minute to make it 1-0 for the home side.
Just before halftime, Charlton scored another for the Trojans to put them up 2-0 after 45 minutes.
Isabel Vega added the third goal of the day for the Trojans in the 68th minute to make it 3-0.
The Queens earned a goal back near the end of the game to make the final score 3-1.
Charlton was named player of the game for the Trojans and the SAIT Trojans female athlete of the week.
With the win against the Queens, the Trojans remain undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record and sit in first place in the ACAC women’s soccer standings, with 53 goals for and four against.
Next for the Trojans women’s soccer team is a home matchup against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Saturday, Oct. 18, at noon, followed by an away game against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Sunday, Oct. 19, at noon.
MEN
After a 3-1 win at home against the Ambrose Lions last weekend, the SAIT Trojans men’s soccer team took on the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings at home on Sunday, Oct. 12.
Trojans fullback Masataka Kajitani opened the scoring in the seventh minute to put the home side up 1-0.
Hafiz Major assisted Esrom Yohannes, who scored in the 28th minute to make it 2-0 for the Trojans in the first half.
In the second half, second-year centre-back Ty Ritchie scored from outside the box to make it 3-0.
The game finished with a goal from rookie winger Hani Hiyabu to seal the 4-0 win.
Major was named player of the game for the Trojans and the SAIT Trojans male athlete of the week.
With the win against the Kings, the Trojans sit second in the ACAC men’s soccer standings with a 7-1 record, 34 goals for and five against.
Next for the Trojans men’s soccer team is a home matchup against the Kodiaks on Saturday, Oct. 18, and a trip to Medicine Hat to face the Rattlers on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2:15 p.m.
Women’s hockey drop first game of the season at home
The SAIT Trojans women’s hockey team held their home opener on Friday, Oct. 10, at WinSport Arena in Calgary.
They welcomed provincial rival NAIT Ooks to Calgary in the first game of the season.
In the first period, the Ooks jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Greir Slabaida and Isabella Roppo.
After a scoreless second period, Kaylan Easson pulled a late goal back for the Trojans in the third, but the game ended 2-1 for NAIT.
Next for the Trojans women’s hockey team are two straight games against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
Game one takes place on Friday, Oct. 17, at 6:45 p.m. at WinSport Arena, followed by a rematch in Red Deer the next day at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 7 p.m.
