Women’s soccer continue unbeaten streak, men earn crucial win against Lions
WOMEN
The SAIT Trojans women’s soccer team had a phenomenal weekend, earning two wins and clinching a playoff spot.
The Trojans took on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Friday, Oct. 3, in Camrose.
Veteran midfielder Nikki Charlton opened the scoring for the Trojans in the 16th minute, followed by Saige Joseph 12 minutes later to make it 2-0.
Less than a minute into the second half, Sofia Pena put the Trojans up 3-0.
The offence was all Trojans for the rest of the game, with Meaghan Wiebe, Yuko Hamada and Sofia Sproule all adding goals to finish the match 6-0.
The Trojans returned home for a matchup against the Ambrose Lions at Cohos Commons Field on Saturday.
Charlton once again opened the scoring for the Trojans, netting just nine minutes into the match.
Nicole Noble and Wiebe also added goals in the first half to put the Trojans up 3-0 after 45 minutes.
The Trojans added two goals in two minutes — from Amy Fallows in the 52nd minute and Charlton in the 54th — to make it 5-0.
Fallows scored her second of the game in the 61st minute, followed by Hamada, who had the final goal in the 83rd to make it 7-0.
With the back-to-back wins, the Trojans remain undefeated at 9-0 and sit first in the ACAC women’s soccer standings, with 50 goals for and three against.
The Trojans also clinched the first playoff spot in the ACAC women’s soccer south division.
Next up for the Trojans is a home matchup against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens on Sunday, Oct. 12, at noon.
MEN
After a win and a loss last weekend, the Trojans took on the Lions at home on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Trojans winger Esrom Yohannes scored in the fifth and 22nd minutes to put the home side up 2-0 early.
Isaiah McMahon converted a penalty kick right at halftime to get one back for the Lions.
Rookie fullback Annel Correa scored in the 68th minute to finish the match 3-1 for the Trojans.
With the win, the Trojans remain first in the ACAC men’s soccer standings, with 30 goals for and five against.
The Trojans also clinched a playoff spot in the ACAC men’s soccer south division.
Next up for the Trojans is a home matchup against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2:15 p.m.
Trojans continue to dominate ACAC cross-country
The fourth ACAC Running Room Grand Prix took place on Saturday, Oct. 4, hosted by the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings in Camrose.
Women
In the women’s 6-kilometre race, the Trojans had one runner, rookie Eden Pelletier.
She finished 22nd with a time of 27:59 and a pace of 4:40 per kilometre.
Men
Nathan Woyessa added to another outstanding season for the Trojans men’s cross-country team.
Woyessa finished first overall in the 8-kilometre race, which featured 54 runners.
His time of 25:51 was nearly a minute faster than the second-place finisher.
Also running for the Trojans were Alexei Fadeyiw, who finished 34th, and Silas Lyuke, who finished 35th.
The next ACAC cross-country meet takes place on Saturday, Oct. 25, when the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves host the ACAC cross-country championships.
Trojans fastball wraps up season with WCSA playoffs
The SAIT Trojans women’s fastball team competed in the Women’s College Softball Association (WCSA) playoffs this past weekend at Shouldice Athletic Park in Calgary.
They opened the playoff weekend against the WCSA regular-season first-place team, the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat.
After the second inning, the Heat led 4-3 and continued their offence for the rest of the game to win 11-4.
On Saturday afternoon, the Trojans faced the University of Victoria Vikes.
Despite earning several hits off the Vikes pitcher, the Trojans dropped their second game of the day 7-0.
On Saturday night, the Trojans took on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a wild back-and-forth matchup.
The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Huskies answered in the bottom half to tie it 2-2.
After the fourth inning, the game was tied at seven.
In the final inning, the Trojans trailed 10-8 and hit a single to make it 10-9.
The Huskies’ defence held strong from that point and took the game 10-9.
The Trojans’ final playoff game on Sunday was against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Pronghorns scored three runs to jump out to a 7-1 lead.
By the fourth inning, it was 10-7 for the Pronghorns, who added four more runs later in the game to make it 14-7.
The Trojans did not qualify for the National College Fastball Championship and ended their season this weekend.
Coach Dave Hupman reflected on the Trojans’ season.
“As always, it was my sincere pleasure and honour to coach the SAIT Trojans women’s fastball team for the season,” Hupman said.
He also spoke about the core values of SAIT athletics and how his players represent them.
“The student-athletes always represent SAIT as great ambassadors of the school and fully reflect SAIT’s five core principles of fairness, integrity, respect, safety and transparency,” he said.
“I am proud of how the team and players conducted themselves this season and take great enjoyment in playing a small part to assist these student-athletes on their journey,” Hupman added.
Men’s rugby earn crucial wins against Dinos and Huskies
The SAIT Trojans men’s rugby team took on hometown rival, the University of Calgary Dinos, on Saturday, Oct. 4, in Calgary.
After splitting the season series last year, the Trojans earned a 38-29 win over the Dinos on Saturday.
The following day, the Trojans beat the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 58-6 to go unbeaten on the weekend.
The Trojans will face the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Sunday, Oct. 19, in Calgary.
