Women’s soccer earn narrow win against Kodiaks, men stay undefeated

WOMEN
The Trojans women’s soccer team earned a tight but convincing 1-0 away win under the lights on Friday, Sept. 19, against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks.

Trojans captain Meaghan Wiebe scored the lone goal of the match just after halftime in the 48th minute.

Wiebe continues to add to her tally this season, leading the Trojans offence with five goals in four games, ranking second among ACAC women’s soccer goal leaders.

With the win, the Trojans remain undefeated with a 5-0 record and sit in first place in the ACAC women’s soccer standings with 28 goals for and two against.

Next up for the Trojans is an away matchup against the Medicine Hat Rattlers on Saturday, Sept. 27, at noon, followed by a home game against the Olds Broncos the next day, also at noon.

MEN
After an 11-0 home thrashing of the Olds Broncos last weekend, the Trojans men’s soccer team took on the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks on Friday, Sept. 19, in Lethbridge.

The Trojans were without longtime head coach Connor Brady and centre-back Miguel Mendoza, both serving one-match suspensions for red cards last weekend against the Broncos.

In the match, the Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute as Esrom Yohannes scored twice late in the half.

Orien Domin scored for the Kodiaks seconds before halftime to cut the deficit to 2-1 after 45 minutes.

In the 63rd minute, ACAC leading scorer Robert Woodroffe-Brown restored the two-goal cushion, putting the Trojans ahead 3-1.

Rookie Hani Hibayu iced the match for the Trojans in the 87th minute to make it 4-1.

Yohannes was named player of the match after scoring his fourth and fifth goals of the season.

With the win, the Trojans remain undefeated with a 4-0 record and sit in first place in the ACAC men’s soccer standings with 23 goals for and two against.

Next up for the Trojans is an away matchup against the Medicine Hat Rattlers on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m., followed by a home game against the Olds Broncos the next day, also at 2 p.m.

 

Trojans golf bounce back after disappointing first regional

After a strong response to their opening regional, the SAIT Trojans golf team looked to capture the ACAC Golf Championship at Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer.

The championship ran from Sunday, Sept. 21, to Tuesday, Sept. 23.

WOMEN’S INDIVIDUAL
The Trojans had two golfers in the women’s individual field.

In the first round, Chloe Major shot an 18-over 89 to finish sixth.

Kayleigh Shannon finished 15th with a 35-over 107.

In the second round, Major dropped three spots after carding a 31-over 103 to sit ninth.

Shannon shot a 102 to remain in 15th.

On Tuesday, Major moved up one place after shooting a 97 and finished the championship in eighth.

Shannon remained in 15th after shooting a 108 in the final round.

MEN’S INDIVIDUAL
In the men’s individual competition, the Trojans looked to build on their impressive showing at regionals.

Veteran Regan Colberg and Stryanka Jackson both finished the first round tied for third with even-par 72s.

Zach Lehman shot a two-over 74 to tie for ninth.

Jaden Patel carded a three-over 75 to join the tie for ninth, while Chris Colberg, Brady Burns and Dylan Sunderland each posted four-over 76s to tie for 13th.

The second round saw movement across the leaderboard. Jackson dropped to fourth after a one-over 73.

Colberg shot a four-over 76 to fall to sixth.

Lehman climbed two spots to seventh, while Patel remained tied for ninth.

In the final round, Colberg shot a two-under 69 to finish tied for third place.

Stryanka shot a five-over 77 to drop to a tie for sixth place with Trojans teammate Zach Lehman.

Following them was Patel in ninth.

WOMEN’S TEAM
The Trojans women’s team held steady in fourth place through both rounds with a 52-over total.

The pair shot a combined 61-over par in the third round to finish in fourth place.

MEN’S TEAM
The Trojans men’s team finished the first round at five-over.

They shot 11-over in the second round for a 16-over total.

In the final round, the Trojans combined for a championship best even-par to finish in first place with a 16-over total to par gross.

Trojans impress in second ACAC cross-country Grand Prix

After a dominant season last year, the SAIT Trojans cross-country team competed in the Running Room Grand Prix Series race No. 2 on Saturday, Sept. 20, in Lethbridge.

In the women’s 6-kilometre race, veteran Kerigan Frampton finished first with a time of 25:37, averaging 4:16 per kilometre.

Teammate Eden Pelletier placed 20th in 31:57, running 5:19 per kilometre.

On the men’s side, the Trojans had four runners in the 8-kilometre race. Veteran Nathan Woyessa won the event in 27:55, averaging 3:29 per kilometre.

Max Reisinger finished 10th in 33:01, followed by Silas Iyuke in 20th at 36:30 and Alexai Fadwyiw in 23rd at 38:04.

The next ACAC cross-country race is Saturday, Sept. 27, hosted by the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves in Grande Prairie.

 

Women’s fastball battle heat in Lethbridge

After going winless in Regina the previous weekend, the SAIT Trojans women’s fastball team looked to pick up their first victory of the season in Lethbridge.

With temperatures reaching 35 C, the Trojans faced not only tough competition but also blistering heat.

On Friday, Sept. 19, the Trojans opened against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. A high-scoring first inning from the hosts put SAIT behind early, and the Trojans dropped the game 11-1.

Saturday morning, the Trojans faced the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Huskies led 1-0 after two innings before breaking the game open with a leadoff home run and seven straight singles en route to a 14-1 final.

Later that afternoon, SAIT met their crosstown rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos. After two innings, the Dinos led 6-4, but a two-run home run from second baseman Christina Van De Velde tied the game at six. The Dinos answered with four runs in the third and continued to pile on, sealing a 13-6 win.

In Sunday’s opener, the Trojans faced the University of Regina Cougars. The Cougars led 12-9 after three innings, then added three home runs and capitalized on six SAIT errors in one inning to finish 19-9.

The weekend closed with a rematch against the Dinos. Trojans outfielder Makayla Douglas hit her third home run of the season, but SAIT fell 11-1.

The Trojans will travel to Kelowna, B.C., next weekend still in search of their first win of the season.

 

Women’s rugby drop opening two games, men split against Cougars and Heat

The SAIT Trojans men’s and women’s rugby teams opened their seasons this past weekend, with the women playing two games in Saskatoon and the men hosting two matches at home.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, the women faced Brandon University and fell 32-7.

The following day, the Trojans took on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and dropped their second straight, 41-31.

The women return to action Friday night at home.

The men’s team had a mixed weekend.

SAIT opened with a 27-24 win over the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday, but lost a heartbreaker Sunday, 32-30, to the defending champion UBCO Heat.

The Heat sealed the victory with a penalty kick on the final play of the match.
