Women’s soccer remain undefeated, men thrash Broncos at home

Women’s

The SAIT Trojans women’s soccer team picked up a crucial win Saturday, Sept. 13, away to the host of the 2025 CCAA women’s soccer national championship, Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.

Trojans veteran Nikki Charlton scored twice in the first half, in the ninth and 14th minutes, with assists from Isabel Vega and Meaghan Wiebe to put the Trojans up 2-0.

In the 27th minute, Olivia Lundell converted a penalty kick to get one back for the Queens.

After a tough second half that saw no scoring, the Trojans held on for a 2-1 win in Red Deer.

On Sunday, the Trojans faced the winless Olds College Broncos at Cohos Commons Field at SAIT.

The Trojans were up 6-0 at halftime with a pair of goals each from Saige Joseph and Charlton, and singles from veteran striker Rachelle O’Leary and third-year winger Amy Fallows.

Selena Alain and Wiebe added goals in the second half to seal an 8-0 victory.

With two wins on the weekend, the Trojans remain undefeated at 4-0 and sit in first place in the ACAC women’s soccer standings with 27 goals for and just two against.

Next up is an away match against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.

Men’s

After a 6-1 win away to the Ambrose University Lions, the SAIT Trojans men’s soccer team faced the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Red Deer.

It was a day to remember for Trojans winger Esrom Yohannes, who scored the lone goal of the first half and added goals in the 47th and 57th minutes to complete his hat trick and secure a 3-0 win.

On Sunday, the Trojans hosted the Olds College Broncos and put on an offensive showcase.

After a 5-0 first half—featuring a hat trick from rookie Shadrach Boakye and two goals from Robert Woodroffe-Brown—the Trojans rotated their lineup and kept scoring.

Rookie centre-back Cruz Dodson scored three minutes into the second half to make it 6-0.

Woodroffe-Brown completed his hat trick in the 60th minute and was later replaced by Grant Johnson, who added a goal in the 72nd.

The highlight of the afternoon came from Hani Hiyabu, who chipped the Broncos’ keeper from the halfway line to make it 9-0.

With two wins on the weekend, the Trojans remain undefeated at 3-0 and lead the ACAC men’s soccer standings with 19 goals for and just one against.

Next up is an away match against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Friday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m.

 

Trojans golf bounce back after disappointing first regional

After a mixed start to the ACAC golf season, the Trojans bounced back in the second regional at Lynx Ridge, hosted by SAIT in Calgary.

Women’s individual

The Trojans had three golfers competing individually.

Chloe Major was the top finisher for SAIT in sixth, shooting a six-over 87.

Bayly Scoffin tied for 12th with a 43-over 114, and Kayleigh Shannon finished 17th with a 55-over 126.

In the second round, Major held sixth with a 36-over total. Scoffin dropped one place to 13th with a 60-over, and Shannon climbed to 15th at 71-over.

Men’s individual

In men’s play, the Trojans dominated the top 10 in the first round.

Veteran Regan Colberg shot a one-over 72 to finish second, followed by Jackson Stryanka and Chris Colberg tied for third at two-over 73.

Rookie Zach Lehman carded a three-over 74 to tie for fifth, while Jaden Patel tied for 10th with a four-over 75.

The second round brought plenty of movement.

Regan Colberg shot an even-par 71 to tie for first place with Hayden Prins of Concordia University.

Chris Colberg shot two-over to finish fourth.

Stryanka carded a six-over 77 to tie for seventh.

Women’s team

In the first round, Major shot 26-over and Shannon 43-over, putting SAIT in third heading into round two.

In the second round, Major shot 10-over and Shannon 16-over for a 95-over total, good for third place overall in the women’s team standings.

Men’s team

The Trojans men’s team had a strong weekend, finishing first overall.

Regan Colberg led with a one-over 72, followed by Stryanka’s two-over 73, Lehman’s three-over 74 and Patel’s four-over 75.

In round two, SAIT secured first place, highlighted by Colberg’s even-par 71.

Next for the Trojans golf team is the ACAC Golf Championship from Sunday, Sept. 21, to Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer.

 

Women’s fastball earns vital experience in Victoria

After dropping five straight games the previous weekend, the SAIT Trojans women’s fastball team looked to bounce back this past weekend in Victoria.

On Friday, Sept. 12, the Trojans took on the University of Victoria Vikes.

After just two innings, the Trojans trailed 14-0 and were unable to recover, losing their first game of the weekend 16-0.

Saturday morning brought another tough loss for the Trojans, a 16-1 defeat in a rematch against the Vikes.

On Saturday night, the Trojans battled in a tight matchup against the Mount Royal University Cougars.

Up 7-1 in the fourth inning, the Cougars rallied in the final inning to walk off with a 9-8 win.

Samara Sawyer paced the Trojans’ offence with two singles and two doubles in the loss.

On Sunday morning, the Trojans faced the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat.

After another high-scoring game for the Heat, the visitors pulled away with a 13-0 win.

In their final game of the weekend, a rematch against the Heat, the Trojans fell 17-0, suffering their fourth loss in two days and extending their winless streak.

SAIT head coach David Hupman reflected on the weekend.

“The Trojan players represent SAIT with passion, enthusiasm and respect for others,” he said.

“The team continues to look forward to next week’s schedule in beautiful Lethbridge,” Hupman added.
